Oversized, Boxy or Baby Tee? How to Size 2026's Biggest T-Shirt Trends
This season's t-shirts pull in two opposite directions at once: big, boxy, cropped shapes on one side and small, shrunken retro tees on the other — with striped, baseball and long-sleeve tees somewhere in between. Each one is designed to sit on your body differently, which means "just order your usual size" often goes wrong. Here's how to get each trend right, using one number: your chest measurement.
First, understand "ease"
Every t-shirt is cut larger than your body. That extra room is called ease — the difference between your chest measurement and the garment's chest measurement. Trends are really just different amounts of ease. As a rough guide (in total chest circumference):
| Fit | Approx. ease over your chest | How it looks |
|---|---|---|
| Baby / shrunken | 0–2 in (0–5 cm) | Close to the body, short |
| Slim / fitted | 2–4 in (5–10 cm) | Follows your shape |
| Regular | 4–6 in (10–15 cm) | The classic tee |
| Relaxed | 6–8 in (15–20 cm) | Loose but not baggy |
| Oversized / boxy | 8–14 in (20–35 cm) | Wide, dropped shoulders |
These ranges vary by brand, but they explain why the same "M" can look fitted on one label and huge on another. Once you know your chest and the look you want, you can read any size chart with confidence.
Oversized & boxy tees
The biggest trend of the year is the wide, boxy tee — often with a slightly cropped hem, a dropped shoulder seam and bigger sleeves. The most common mistake is sizing up a regular tee to fake the look. That makes everything bigger, including the length, so you get a long, sloppy shirt instead of a wide, short one.
- If the brand sells it as "oversized" or "boxy": buy your true size. The extra width is already built in.
- If you're sizing up a regular tee: go up one size at most, and check the body length — it should still finish around your hip bone.
- Check the shoulder seam: on a boxy tee it should drop 2–5 cm past your natural shoulder. More than that and the sleeves will swallow your arms.
Baby tees & ringer tees
At the other extreme, the small, retro baby tee — often a ringer with contrast trim on the neck and sleeves — is back. These are cut with almost no ease and a shorter body. Buy your true size if you want the snug, cropped look the style is known for; size up one only if you want it to skim rather than hug. Because they're often 100% cotton, expect a little shrinkage after the first hot wash.
Baseball (raglan) tees
Baseball tees use raglan sleeves: a diagonal seam from the underarm to the collar, often in a contrast colour, instead of a seam on top of the shoulder. Because there's no shoulder seam to line up, shoulder width matters less and chest and sleeve length matter more. Go with your chest measurement, and if you're between sizes with broad shoulders, take the larger one — raglan cuts can pull across the upper back.
Long-sleeve white tees
The plain long-sleeve crewneck is everywhere this year, worn either fitted or a bit baggy. The extra thing to check is sleeve length: sleeves should end at your wrist bone, or slightly past it if you like a slouchy cuff. If the chest fits but sleeves are short, look for "tall" sizing rather than sizing up.
Retro stripes, sporty & football-jersey tees
Striped tees, sporty tees and retro football-style shirts mostly come in regular or relaxed cuts. Size as normal — but note that horizontal stripes visually widen, so many people prefer a fit that's close rather than loose. Jersey-style shirts in performance fabrics have less stretch recovery than cotton jersey, so don't size down expecting them to "give".
The fool-proof method: measure a tee you love
The single best way to shop any trend online is to lay a t-shirt you already like flat on a table and measure it:
- Pit-to-pit: straight across, 2–3 cm below the armholes. Double it for the full chest.
- Length: from the highest point of the shoulder down to the hem.
- Shoulder: seam to seam across the back.
Then compare those numbers to the brand's garment measurements (not body measurements) for the trend you're buying. If you want a boxier version of your favourite tee, look for a size that's 5–10 cm wider pit-to-pit but about the same length.
